Houston, Texas is the city in which I call home and have my entire heart invested in. In my twenty-four years of life I have lived in Houston and Allentown, PA, but twenty of those years have been in Houston. Although I have gone to school in this city, lived in this city, and worked and volunteered in Houston, there are so many things that I was unaware of. With 474,000 people living in poverty and 188,000 people living below poverty. With that being said I now will explain to you my goal as a future educator. I feel it is important that we implement a program that helps high school students understand the importance of college and why it can be the next best thing for them. I will be putting this into action by building a mentorship class in high schools that will allow students to connect with mentors to help them build their path to higher education.
I focused on using Servant Leadership in my program. I felt that it was important for my plan to focus on individuals and that is something that is found in servant leadership. My main focus was for these children to build awareness under the servant leadership. With the help of their mentors they are going to be able to choose a path of higher education while understanding why that path is best for them. This showed a lot of leadership from both the mentors and the students/ mentees.
I chose to work with individuals in a large setting such as the classroom. My community of practice was focused on why my community needed a program such as mentorship in high schools to teach students the importance of higher education. While there are individual programs that are outside of the classroom there did not seem to be anything like this offered in the local high schools here in Houston. With that being said it was my job as a future educator to step up to the plate and take the lead, and with that I present you with my action plan.
